From the frontline of the Nepal earthquake

Posted on July 24, 2015

At our July Conference each year, we relish the opportunity to hear from one of the charities we have supported over the previous 12 months. This year, we were grateful to hear from Margaret Bell, Women’s Health Advisor and Medical Unit Manager with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and to present her with a donation for MSF’s vital work.

Margaret shared a number of her field work experiences with us from Darfur in Western Sudan, Nigeria in West Africa, and from her recent experiences from the frontline of the Nepal earthquakes in May. MSF arrived within 24 hours of the first earthquake to provide traumatised survivors with emergency medical aid, basic supplies and temporary shelters.

Margaret’s first hand stories brought to life many of the crises our staff have read about – and reiterated just how lucky we are in Australia. MSF provide precious clean water, access to healthcare and pre- and neonatal care, along with an emergency medical response, to many of the poorest nations of the world.

More than 80% of MSF’s budget internationally comes from private donations, and in Australia 100% of their budget comes from private sources. Commercial Eyes is proud to support MSF’s vital work.
